Sri Lanka national cricket team has been one of the cricketing giants over the years. They are the ones who took the game to next level by winning the 1996 world cup. Sri Lankan cricket team is the full member team of international cricket council and it has got its right to play all forms of the cricket including test cricket, one-day internationals and t20 cricket.  Sri Lankan cricket team first played its international cricket in 1927 and was awarded test status in 1982. Cricket has come to Sri Lanka right from the English colonial rule. The first Sri Lankan cricket team was established in the year of 1802 and it was called as a Columbo cricket team and changed their name to Ceylon cricket team. After the re-establishment of Sinhalese government in 1950, the team started faring well in all the outing. They continue to square the victories at the international arena. Due to their consistent performance ICC made them the full member team in 1982. After that, they started playing against all nations and started clinching victories.

Their strong performance at international level earned lots of popularity for the game among the people of Sri Lanka. Cricket has been made as their national sport and it becomes widely popular among the Sri Lankan people. Their success mainly depended on their strong domestic culture. There are 8 provinces in Sri Lanka and each province has their own team in all formats of the game. Infrastructure has also well each province have their own ground and own academies to train their players.  Since it is the national sport their government also supporting them financially and government jobs were provided to the players which also allow them to get job security. So many players are willing to play cricket there which is not happening in other cricketing giants like Australia and England.

After awarding test status in 1982 the Sri Lankan national cricket team started performing extremely well in international arena and their governing body played a vital role in developing the right domestic culture. The strong domestic culture allowed them to produce best players for Sri Lankan team and with the right infrastructure and developing of sporting wickets and developing Sri Lanka A team which also played 7unaffocial matches all across the globe tighter earned the right amount of domestic culture for their players.  This led to the rise of many international stars like Arjuna Ranatunga, Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vass, Marvan Atapattu, Arvinda de Silva to international cricket. They played the fearless brand of cricket. They played with the attacking mindset that allowed their team to clinch victories against international cricketing giants like South Africa, Australia, and England.

Even though they tasted some major victories against top playing nationals they were highly criticized for their inconsistency. Sri Lanka entered into the 1996 team as minnows but they proved the world wrong. Their captain Arjuna Ranatunga was the prime reason for this as a player himself he started raising the bar and the decision he took to promote the then bowler Sanath Jayasuriya as the opening batsmen played a crucial role for their success. Sanath with his natural stroke making Ability played a crucial role in getting the right amount of starts for their team. He used to score quickly at top order and the duo of Arjuna Ranatunga and Arvinda de Silva took care of their middle order. They made the history by becoming the first nation to win the world cup without losing the single match. They went on to beat world class teams like West Indies, Australia, England, and India over the team which is then regarded as the best achievement.

After emerging as champions they were in the place to prove the world that their victories are not a fluke they have got some real talent. After that, all the teams started taking Sri Lanka seriously and they continuously raised their bars in international cricket thanks to the strong performance of their players like Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vaas Muthiah Muralidharan, and many others. They won the Asia cup in 1998 and they had also won the ICC champions trophy along with India in 2002. They also made into the semi-finals of 2003 world cup and finals of 2011 and 2007 world cup which is the phenomenal record. They also won ICC t20 world cup in 2014 and fared well in 2015 world cup by reaching quarterfinals. Their bowler Muthiah Muralidharan was the highest wicket taker in test cricket by 800 2wickets. Their players like Chaminda Vaas, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene all are proved their mantle at international arena and they are stands all in the legends lists in record books.
