Although there are a number of festivals which gets celebrated all around the years in almost every part of the country, Diwali is one such festival which holds its own importance in Indian Culture and got a very interesting story behind it.

It’s been said that when Lord Rama came back to his place Ayodhya along with his brother Laxmana and wife Sita after completing a 14 year’s exile which also included the killing of Devil Ravana, the people of Ayodhya decorated the whole city with lights to welcome their beloved Prince of Ayodhya. While the day when Lord Rama killed Ravana is been celebrated as “ Dussehra” around the country, its Diwali which comes exactly 20 days after the same as its been said that it took almost 20 days for Lord Rama to reach Ayodhya from Lanka.

This year, the auspicious occasion of Diwali is going to be celebrated across every part of the country and globe on 7th November 2018. The “Muhurta” for the “ Laxmi  Pooja” would start at 6:12 pm in the night and will end at 8:10 pm. The Total Duration of the Muhurta will be of 1 hour and 58 minutes and as per the Hindu Mythology, this time has been quoted as the best time to worship “Goddess Laxmi” on the occasion of Diwali.

The whole pooja is performed in a number of steps and while you do it, you first need to purify yourself by taking a bath and wear new clothes for the ‘Laxmi Pooja”.All the family members are supposed to attend the Pooja and seek the blessings of Goddess Laxmi afterward.

  • Assemble and collect all Diwali Pooja items at your place of worship where the pooja is going to be performed.
  • The Face of the spot should be towards east direction during the pooja
  • Place the stool upfront in that spot and put a clean red cloth on it. You can also use a small towel.
  • You then need to place the idols of both Laxmi and Ganesh on the spot.
  • Place oil lamps on both sides
  • You are then required to put Incense sticks on the right side of the “Pooja sthal”.
  • Get ready with a plate of Kumkum, Chandan, turmeric powder, coins, betel nuts, and leaves
  • Put the Bananas on the sides of the Pooja that along with the Prasad.
  • Then take a cup of rice and get it mixed with few pinches of Turmeric powder. Mix it again after sprinkling some water in that. This mixture is known as Akshata
  • Put the flowers on your right-hand side and place the Akshata on the same plate as well.
  • Be ready with a Kalasha filled with water
  • Put Panchapatram or a cup full of water on your front and further put paper napkins at the sides
  • The Females are supposed to be sitting on the right sides of the male members.
  • Chant the Mantras while worshipping Goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha and the Pooja gets concluded with the “ Laxmi Aarti”.
  • Distribute Prasada to every member and take blessings from your elders.

Diwali gets celebrated across a period of 5 days in India and it gets kick-started with the start of the “Dhan- teras” and ends with the “Bhai Dooj” festival in the process. On the day of Dhan teras, people buy new utensils and jewels as its been called auspicious to buy a new item on this day. The day after Diwali is been celebrated in parts of Uttar Pradesh as “Govardhan Pooja” and the last day is marked as Bhai- dooj which marks the day of great bonding between brothers and sisters across the whole Hindu Community.
